Hi, I am in Alaska and have just begun to make preparations for a homeschool
prom in 2005. Any input, advice, encouragement would be greatly appreciated.
For the last three years I have had the privilage of hosting "monthly
homeschool teen events" for 7th graders and up. This event has grown from 21
in attendance to 45 teens. Sixth graders eagerly look forward to joining the
ranks of "teens" to attend these events. Working with the teens has blessed
me in so many ways, chiefly by really learning to see the kids and what they
are about and by the special friendships developed with other likeminded
families.
I think it is time to honor their request for a formal prom. So, let the
adventure begin!!!
Blessings,
Eileen Gravelle

HIGH SCHOOL PROM
Saturday, May 14, 7 p.m. 12 midnight
The
Signature Grand
6900
State Road 84 Davie
(South side of I-595, just east of University
Dr. on SR 84)
There’s still time to buy tickets
for this year’s exquisite South Florida Senior celebration, which will be
held at the exclusive Signature Grand(www.thesignaturegrand.com)
on May 14, 2005, from 7:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. This year’s
prodigious prom brings us “The Phantom of the Opera”, a simply titillating
affair. On behalf of the Paris Grand Opera House, the Opera Populaire,
you are cordially invited to attend this elegant 1890’s Parisian
masquerade party as a most honored opera guest. Having been identified as
a member of the Paris elite, you are entreated to spend an entire evening
in unsurpassed opulence, commencing with hor d’oeuvres, a sumptuous buffet
meal, delectable desserts, an overflowing soda bar, scrumptious
non-alcoholic pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris, a phenomenal
Christian DJ, and much, much more! The price for this ostentatiously
stylish soiree is $55. But be forewarned...the deadline to guarantee
admission to this highly fashionable engagement is May 3rd.
OG
All Florida
homeschoolers and their guests, including homeschool alumni, are invited
to attend .
Prom Dress Policy: Dress for
the evening is formal. GENTLEMEN: Dress suits
or tuxedos or sports coats with dress slacks are all
appropriate. All should be worn with a dress shirt and tie, and dress
shoes. LADIES: Modest, non-provocative, non-revealing
formal dresses with no extreme slits or short hemlines.
No skintight or see-through dresses, no cutouts in dresses, and no slits
above the knees. Necklines need to be tasteful with no cleavage showing.
Dresses should be knee length or below. If your attire is
questionable, please err on the side of being "too modest" because
defining a standard that everyone agrees on is impossible. Also,
remember, swing dancing and other more energetic types of dancing involve
a lot of movement including dips and high kicks. Your evening gown should
be able to accommodate this activity. (Don’t feel as though you have to
drain your bank account to look good for the prom! Thrift stores and
consignment shops can be excellent places to find great looking suits,
sports coats and pants, as well as attractive evening gowns. It’s worth
checking them out!)
Behavior Policy: PSG Board
members and prom hosts reserve the right to ask anyone attending a PSG
sponsored activity to leave that activity if their attire, behavior and/or
speech is deemed inappropriate, based on the judgment of the PSG Board
members or hosts present at that activity. Parents will be called if need
be to pick up their youth. If a student has driven themselves to the
event, they will be asked to leave. Parents will be notified of the
inappropriate behavior.
Music Policy: Music
will be limited to Christian and other non-offensive secular music.
To
purchase tickets or for more information about the prom, please email
psgteenhotline@yahoo.com.
Checks should be made out to the “Broward County
Homeschool PSG” and mailed c/o: Jo Anne

Questions:
I have looked through your websites about the
proms that you have put on your website. There was some additional
information that I would be interested in.
I live in Illinois and our homeschooling
community has never had a prom. My young people in my family are serious
about planning one. I would like more information about insurance, why you
decided to have your's at the location you did (was it for insurance
purposes, etc.), do I need to contact an attorney or go under any homeschool
group or such group and what did you do with the funds: is it rolled over
if there is extra, what happens if it is not enough, etc.? Did the
homeschool student's do fund raisers? How was this money handled and
recorded to keep that legal? Was security required? Did you hire off-duty
police?
I'm sure there are many more questions to ask
especially when it comes to planning the prom itself but these questions
answered above would be a great start in helping us. They would be some of
the most important aspects of our beginning this planning process.
I would appreciate any information that you
would be willing to share.
Thank you for the information posted on your
website. It was very informative and helpful. Also, thank you for your
time and care.
Sincerely,

This prom is open to all
homeschoolers. Homeschoolers may bring a guest/guests that are non-homeshoolers.
This is an upscale event and well chaperoned. I am a Christian and I
request that the DJ doesn't play any music with bad language and sexually
suggestive lyrics. There are plenty of other great songs out there.
Each year we have our reigning prom king and queen draw out the name of
the new prom king and queen. We do not want this to be a popularity
contest. We feel each person attending prom, is unique, special, and
deserves to hold the title.
(only homeschoolers are eligible for king and queen)
We also have fun awards that we give out every year. They include such
awards as: Dress most likely to be seen at the Oscars, Two friends most
likely to end up in a Mexican prison, prettiest smile, cutest couple,
etc...
The kids vote on these and everyone is eligible to win them...;o)

Don't miss this once-a-year very special enchanted
evening!
We have a sell out
crowd, 225 people is what the building will hold and we always sell all the
tickets. It is generally about equal boys and girls. Parents and teens both
come, and that is fun. You don't have to have a parent there, but we have a
few dances that are for mother/ son, dad/daughter, etc. The lyrics have been
carefully scrutinized and the music is clean and wholesome. All types of
music are included: oldies, new music, twist, polka, cha cha, Beach Boys,
and tons more. The feeling in the
prom is a
good one--it is not dark and there is a wholesome fun type feeling. We
always have fabulous decorations! This is a
no-date dance and you get a dance card when you enter. You dance with as
many different people as you can--like a race to meet new people-- and when
you dance, you get the person to sign your dance card. As soon as it is
full, you put your card in a basket and get a new card and there are
drawings for prizes all through the evening, from that basket. Everyone
dances alot and fills up several cards. It is a way for you to get to know
the names of the people you are dancing with too. We have
refreshments and dance games, where everyone on the floor gets in a line to
dance, etc. So, it isn't a wallflower situation. The dress is very modest,
and that makes a very good feeling. Everyone dresses up to the
hilt--corsages, hairdos, formals, etc. which is a fun thing to look forward
to. We take lots of photos in our family before leaving for the dance, and
at the dance. It is a chance for a young woman to shine! Anyway, every year
I get lots of letters after the
Prom from
teenagers telling me that it the best dance they have ever been to! Anyway,
I hope you come and have a great time! See you there! Diane Hopkins |

This prom is open to all homeschoolers. Homeschoolers may bring a
guest/guests that are non-homeshoolers. This is an upscale event and well
chaperoned. I am a christian and I request that the DJ doesn't play any
music with bad language and sexually suggestive lyrics. There are plenty of
other great songs out there that the kids can enjoy.
Each year we have our reigning prom king and queen draw out the name of the
new prom king and queen. We do not want this to be a popularity contest. We
feel each person attending prom, is unique, special, and deserves to hold
the title.
(only homeshoolers are eligible for king and queen)
We also have fun awards that we give out every year. They include such
awards as: Dress most likely to be seen at the Oscars, Two friends most

Homeschool Senior/Junior Five Annual Prom will be held on
Friday, April 23rd at Fair Oaks Country
Club.
This year’s Prom will be held again at Fair Oaks Country Club, take I10
North to Fair Oaks exit just before Boerne. It is an exquisite site with
majestic oak trees filled with white twinkling lights, which line the
parking lot as you drive up it at night. The Ball Room is very spacious and
seats at least two hundred and fifty. To enhance the evening we have half
the room installed with a dance floor. The DJ is a Christian family who have
a phenomenal sound and light system and play a wide variety of safe dance
music. The food last year was superb, chocolate dipped strawberries, chili
con queso & chips, sesame chicken, roast beef with a carving chef, a huge
dessert table and much more. Also served are strawberry non-alcoholic
Daiquiris.
The night is special as it is dedicated to Lord by a local homeshool pastor.
He also shares with the seniors the new challenges they will face as they
venture out in the world. A candle lighting ceremony is held to pass the
flame from seniors to juniors. There are a few minutes of fun as we
highlight each senior and one of their attributes with a certificate and
graduation trinket. At the end of the evening each senior will receive a
small memories scrapbook for those attending the Prom to record best wishes
and fond sentiments of friendship. It is an exceptionally special night for
all.
The cost this year will be $50 and any homeschool senior or junior will
receive an invitation. If you know of any homeschool seniors or juniors,
with parental permission,
that would like to attend please send their address to
