Guests
NJ Homeschooled students may bring friends or relatives to the NJ Homeschool
Prom 2003 as guests, whether from NJ or surrounding states, homeschooled or not.
Homeschool Prom 2003 is a prom for NJ homeschooled students and their guests.
Homeschooled students from surrounding states are welcome to attend if they are
members of a group near the NJ border (either side) that has members from both
states, or if they are invited by a NJ homeschooled friend (in this case, the NJ
student should buy the ticket for their guest). People must email or call me to
purchase tickets. One person can buy tickets for a group, as long as the above
conditions are met. Anyone from any other state must be invited by, and attend
with, a NJ student.
Dates are not required nor encouraged but are allowed.
Music
The dynamic Christian DJ, and former homeschooling dad, Jeff Lefevre of CANA
Music, will be back with us again this year. The music will not all be
specifically Christian but will have clean lyrics and content.
Dance
A prom
is mainly a dance. If you don't know how to dance, please learn some basic steps
and practice so you feel comfortable getting out on the dance floor. Some good
dances to learn are swing, Lindy, two-step, box-step, and rumba; they're fun,
easy to learn and can be adapted to a variety of music. In addition to learning
from people you know, there are ballroom dance studios that offer introductory
lessons at discounted prices, instructional books & videos available for free at
public libraries, and dance instruction can even be found on the Internet now.
Click here for short video dance samples, they are safe to 'open.' They may
take a 'long' time to open or download. They will demonstrate the different
types of dances for various types of music.

Almost
everyone has dressed very appropriately & nicely at all four of our annual NJ
Homeschool proms. To help provide a classy, wholesome atmosphere again this
year, these are our dress guidelines with a few changes and additions added this
year:
Dress Requirements
~Minimum for boys: Dress shirt with tie, dress pants, regular or dress shoes (no
sneakers); Dressy turtleneck with a jacket is also acceptable; Suggested for
older teens: Jacket, suit or tuxedo.
~Minimum for girls: Skirt with blouse or dress, dress shoes (no sneakers);
Suggested for older teens: Dressy or formal dress, evening or ball gown.
Modesty Guidelines
Modest styles are encouraged in place of sexy, revealing styles, often
found in teen magazines and department stores, which are not welcome at our prom
since they detract from the wholesome atmosphere we wish to maintain. Almost
everyone has shown very good judgment in this regard at our past proms. To avoid
any misunderstandings, we do have the following restrictions: No low-cut or
plunging necklines, or open plunging backs (below the bra-line); skirts, dresses
and slits should be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee; no bare midriffs or
other inappropriate bare sections; no extremely tight or see-through dresses.
Strapless dresses and dresses with spaghetti straps are allowed as long as the
dress is still modest in presentation because I have seen some dresses more
modest with these features than some without these features. If in
doubt, err on the side of modesty. If you have specific questions, feel free to
call or
email me
me to discuss them. Please Note: These requirements/guidelines will be enforced
and you may be sent home if you don't follow them.
The following links contain many examples of beautiful, more conservative
prom dresses. We're not suggesting you should buy any of these dresses or pay
these kinds of prices, we're showing these dresses for purposes of example only.
Many girls make their own dresses and great bargains in formal attire for both
boys and girls can be found at thrift, resale & consignment stores.

"More
than a dozen teen-aged girls from Kansas have taken a stand against the sexy,
revealing styles that fill the racks of department stores. The Red Bridge Ward's
young women from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of the Olathe
Kansas Stake, have launched a campaign to encourage department stores to carry
more modest styles of clothing that would better reflect their standards and
values. This effort has generated a ground-swell of support from around the
world from other young women and their parents who are also frustrated by
current trends which are low cut, strapless, backless, sleeveless, bare midriff,
short, and tight."

*Update: A large department store has now asked several of these young
women to be part of the stores' buying panel for prom dresses.
Princeton University's Dance Etiquette Guide:
http://www.ee.princeton.edu/~aria/etiquette.html
Although the information at this link is etiquette
specifically for social dances, (such as our Homeschool Prom,) some of it does
not apply. Take what is good and leave the rest.
Dates
As in the past, this is an open
prom and dates are not required nor encouraged but are left up to the parents'
discretion.
Chaperones
There will be chaperones in attendance all evening. Chaperones must buy tickets
also. Students will continue to be chaperoned until they are picked up. Parents
are welcome to come in to pick their teens up at the end of the evening or they
may wait outside.
Location
Belmar is centrally located with easy access via the Garden State Parkway and
Interstate 195 and there are many things available to see and do during the
prom, including the beach & boardwalk, parks, lakes, playgrounds, stores, cafes
& restaurants, and the Beach Cinema in nearby Bradley Beach.
